Your car is listening to what you listen to ...

GM has admitted, well, make that boasted, that for three months they recorded data on 90,000 drivers, and what radio stations they were listening to.  The data was gathered from the cars over the built-in wifi capability.

So how many more every day devices are listening and collecting private information?  Elevators, Smart Buildings, Smart Homes, Smart Toasters, Mobile phones?   How many people really care at all?  Do you mind?

The only part of it I mind is the mis-attribution of data. Say my "nephew" comes over at looks at pornography while at my house. Is that going to be attributed to me, my wife or my daughters? Or will it be recorded as an anomaly as it would be out of the norm for my IP address? I already get bothered by ads showing up for stuff my wife and daughters shop for that I have zero interest in.

You better be interested in that "stuff" or it will get chilly in your home!

My commute always has these mega buses rolling along and they all have their big "Free Wi-Fi" stickers plastered by the entrance(s).    Of course I wouldn't do this but if you happened to have a mount in your vehicle that has a laptop installed with lets say all kinds of tools and that laptop is attached to a high gain antenna mounted on your vehicle how much data could be collected while you are waiting for the next light cycle?

At one time Safeway had a "Safeway card" program.  At one point, because of
stuff I'd bought for someone else, I started to get flyers for pain medication in the
mail.  Then, when I was teaching in Texas, my colleague and I shopped at a store
that had the same house brands, so I tried my number and it worked (getting
discounts).  I suggested he use it too, and he must have continued, since the flyers I
got started becoming really odd.  (I'm always ready to hack the system and mess
with the integrity of corporate systems to corrupt their invasions of my privacy.)

At one point, shortly thereafter, one of Safeway's lawyers misused the card data in
a massively inappropriate way when trying to influence a lawsuit, and, possibly
as a consequence, the program is no more ...

They say for almost any loyalty card program that uses a phone number (at least here in the US) that you can use the phone number from Tommy TuTone's hit "Jenny (867-5309)" and add your area code to it and it will work.
