HI All
If Smart Cities are being digitally enabled, are they safe? Are we prepared?
Which drives the conversation towards IoT and sensor driven cities and smart homes?
People need to be made aware, that it is great to have wonder technological gains, but are we prepared to tackle the responsibilities that go with it and even smarter ways to compromise them?

Living in the DMV (District Maryland Virginia) area I get to witness a lot of stupidity daily. One recent revelation was the camera system for DC was hacked for financial gain. An aside - these hackers are stupid themselves-if D.C. didn't have the budget to properly secure this tech how the heck are they going to pay the hackers their demands? Sorry, just found that to be funny.
Back to the topic-if municipalities are barely scraping to get by now, some are having work force reductions, others are cutting back on services, and yet others are going bankrupt how can they expect to keep tech safe? The cities may be "smart" but their administrators/managers are not.
I love tech and it can be very beneficial. In the wrong hands its just wrong.

I must admit, even though I've been researching and giving presentations on IoT areas for a number of years, now, that question caught me off guard.
And it's pretty terrifying.
Smart homes I'm OK with, since I don't have one, and I'm not putting anything in that category into my home. (I am frequently reminded that I *hate* devices that think they are smarter than I am. Yesterday it was the photocopier at the library. But I digress ...)

Nope.

Ummm, I think your posting does ...
> People need to be made aware!
OK, I gotta admit, I added the exclamation mark. But, hey, how could I resist, with that kind of a setup?
(I'm also trying to think of a "smart city" type of thing locally. And suddenly realized, the Skytrain, which is completely automated and runs without drivers [or even ticket agents] has been running here for more than thirty years!
People need to be made aware! 🙂
Well it appears at least one nation, is talking about it, which is good, but will it come soon enough?
Does it need to be legislated? Certainly volunteering to comply will not work.

Our only hope:
I used to have a quote (which I've lost) along the lines of, if computers get too powerful we'll organize them into a committee. That'll do them in!
Its coming, whether you like or not:
