How to Enrich the Community in 2018

Earn the (ISC)² Enrich badge for demonstrating superior engagement that enriches the (ISC)² Community through the months of June and July.

Why Kudos?  Kudos can have many meanings, but they work best when you want to show someone you read through their article, appreciate (or agree) with their insights, give a thank you to someone for supplying the information, or if you just want to say “Job well done!”

I earned the "Enrich the Community 2018" badge.

I'm not telling you this so you'll be impressed.  I'm not impressed.  I'm on the "why do we have badges and kudos anyway?" side.  I've got over a dozen badges, and, as far as I can tell, you don't have to do anything much to get them.  I got one for making my first post, my 25th post, and my 50th post.  Does it keep on going by 25s?  Will I be getting a badge for my 375th post?  And the Enrich, as far as I can see, is even more artificial and arbitrary.   I made posts, and gave kudos, and got kudos, in May and it didn't get me a badge, and in August I can make a post, get a kudo, and give a kudo and it won't get me a badge.

But I digress.  Because I am not posting now to complain about badges and kudos.

What bugs me is that somehow ISC2 sees the Enrich badge as so important that they have to keep telling me I got one over and over.  I've received more than half a dozen email announcements of it.  I got some kind of screen banner about it.  I've got one of those grey shadow boxes that tell you something has happened right now and if you click on them they will interrupt what you are doing and take you to whatever just happened.  (Which is weird, because I got the badge June 1st, and the shadow box announcement happened yesterday.)

What is it about the Enrich badge?  If I get one, does that automatically give me a seat on the Board or something?

OK, now it's more than just daily.  It seems to have moved up to an "every four hours" cycle ...

I got the same e-mail last Saturday, so I must have posted a message and received & given kudo's (I don't keep track). I'm not as lucky as @rslade to receive the announcement every 4hrs but I didn't get the badge either.

@rslade: how many badges didn't you receive?

On a more serious note: shouldn't we (yes WE, we all make (ISC)2) spend our time/money on solving the issues with the CPE portal and come up with a workable environment instead of spending the time/money on internal marketing (read: badges)?

@SamanthaO_isc2, I would suggest that this badge be awarded subject to moderator approval, in addition to what's stated above. Otherwise you risk a large number of people getting badges for nothing significant.

Take a hypothetical situation, involving 5 members: A, B, C, D and E. Only A tends to post useful material & give kudos out of appreciation --- the other members give Kudos for the sake of it and in the hope that they will get Kudos in return. Consequently, you may find that B, C, D and E hold the badge, despite the fact that they posted material of no significance at all, and have given Kudos for things they haven't read, let alone found useful

To avoid this happening, please consider moderator approval of the posts --- at least for this particular badge.

To me "give one Kudo, receive one Kudo and make one post" seems a low bar to set. 

This is more participation than enrichment. 

Surely for enrichment there should be some value assessment as to the quality of the participation?

Hello everyone, 

Thank you for passing your thoughts along about the Enrich badge. We do understand that the first step in the badge series was an easy one, we wanted to ease everyone into the program and make it easy to get started. As the program continues, it does get more involved and requires more participation. You can take a look at all of the requirements here. 

The issue with the emails should now also be resolved if you are receiving multiple copies of the email notification still, please let me know.

Thanks for the information Samantha, but I still see no value assessment. 

The requirement is simply to add content (any content) and to "like" and be "liked". 

There is absolutely no measure of the value of any content in this scheme to enrich, empower, and excel - only to participate. 

The guidelines, as explained in the link provided, simply do not require any post or associated activity to "add value" to the community.

In addition, the ability to give and receive Kudos is a nothing more than a mechanism to achieve a badge.  I just have to "tag" and be "tagged" to gain merit I don't even have to read a post to tag a community member. Where exactly is the enrichment, empowerment, and excellence in that?

This may start with participation, but without a value assessment I question the wisdom of this approach.  This will achieve "badge chasing" rather than enrichment, empowerment, and excellence IMHO.

@SamanthaO_isc2, even to earn the remainder of the badges, it doesn't seem like the bar's been set too high.

Anyone who's simply eager to accumulate badges might perceive requirements as follows: -

1. Make posts --- the contents of your post needn't be of any significance!
2. Give kudos --- be generous, because it doesn't matter what they're for.
3. Get kudos --- the more you post & the more kudos you give out, the better your chances of getting kudos.
4. Tag posts --- don't worry about relevance; just tag as much as you can!

Assuming the system isn't using AI, moderator approval* for the awarding of badges is very much required.

If it can't be facilitated I fully agree with the others --- the badges would merely promote 'pointless participation.'

Who else is excited about the Enrich, Enable, Excel initiative? I'm proud to say that I will retire from Active military service in the USAF this year and am planning on relocating to the state of Utah. Has anyone lived there that could give me some information about the state or the city of Ogden?
