Would you recognise AI misinformation?

Hi All

The new generative artificial intelligence or augmented intelligence models are likely to spread misinformation at an unprecedented scale, with equal opportunity for falsehoods targeting people on the Right and the Left and injustice for all.

Would you be able to recognise AI misinformation?

Governments may or may not soon regulate AI, but we hope that the AI industry will immediately take basic steps on its own without waiting for new laws. This is in their business interest. Unlike social media companies, whose advertising-based revenue model benefits from the high levels of engagement and page views they earn from spreading conspiracy theories, AI models are designed to be licensed by businesses, governments, and others that expect accuracy, accountability, and transparency.

This may become more of an opinionated response, but do we currently have strong capacities for:

  • identifying logical fallacies*
  • distinguishing fact from fiction*
  • understanding nuance when it appears in journalism*
  • corroborating narratives*
  • discarding ideas when they're determined to be not useful*
  • knowing how to falsify a claim*?

If so, then AI may present a problem from time to time, but we'll beat it back.

If not, then we had other issues before AI came along.

A claim is as good as its veracity.

Hi @ericgeater We hope through good education and awareness.

However, that all goes out the door or window when under pressure or other external factors are considered often.
