Homomorphic encryption a reality and workable?

Has Homomorphic encryption become a reality?   Previously it required a great deal of processing power, and was relatively slow.

Google has been using additive homomorphic encryption for years with partners. Now with the public announcement of Private Join and Compute "everyone" can start applying it - read the full paper and access the open source code and documentation.
