Should we demand a central register for all Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), along with their stated purpose, security controls, development code and affirmation they have been independently reviewed before release?

Or should we just delete Facebook and let others get on with it?

Central register run by whom ?
It would be impossible to follow every API, every App Interface.
and it's not only Facebook. We may be angry at them, rightfully, and demand they be shut down, but what about everyone else ?
I use fb, as securely as I can. I don't use it on my phone or any similar media.
Personally, I don't use FB. However I do feel that it is unavoidable for some kind of social media to be a part of modern connected world. If not facebook, then some faceless-book will surely take its place.
We are in the infant stage of social media, and technologies are being used prematurely. Sometimes I feel like that the society uses FB etc without knowing the full adverse side-effects, just like we had used DDT, asbestos, etc., without knowing the long-lasting environmental damages.
@ChuxingUnfortunately, as you state the maturity level is not there and due to an inherent human condition: Many do not realise the implications of their actions, until it becomes important to them many years down the road. Imagine ones whole life history from birth being dragged up as part of a political campaign to be the next President for instance.
The ramifications and persistence of our actions, are no longer in our control.

"The ramifications and persistence of our actions, are no longer in our control" -- yes and no, as a 'grown-up', if you post online always with respect, as if you were talking to someone face-to-face without the 'protection' of anonymity, your record should be just fine.
Of course, if you are young and reckless, whatever you posted will follow you forever. Unfortunately, most younger generations have no clue, until it is too late.
The best option is, try exposing your personal life online as little possible ...
