Amazon Sidewalk - Privacy Gone Wrong

Amazon intends to register its family of hardware devices that are operational in the U.S.—including Echo speakers, Ring Video Doorbells, Ring Floodlight Cams, and Ring Spotlight Cams—into Sidewalk as it readies to roll out the shared mesh network in the country starting June 8th.  Seriously, if you do privacy the number one rule is informed consent and to make a service opt out by default. Amazon Privacy is a failure in both regards. Do not believe the so called security described here. Ask yourself why is Amazon building a mesh network? Strangely, this is a twist on Google's Streetview where they got into a lot of trouble for collecting wireless SSIDs. Amazon takes that abuse one step further...

Here is what you need to do to protect your privacy. Elect to opt-out of the device-to-device network either via Alex or Ring apps by following the below steps:

  • Alexa app: Open More > select Settings > Account Settings > Amazon Sidewalk, and toggle it on/off
  • Ring app: Tap "three-lined" menu > Control Center > Sidewalk, and tap the slider button
