Not new: Using sonic resonance to crash HDDs through PC speakers

So this isn't "new," per se but it is getting renewed interest.  Several outlets, including The Hacker News have published an article about another proof of concept in crashing HDDs using sound waves played out of the computer's own speakers. The Hacker News: Attackers Can Use Sonic and Ultrasonic Signals to Crash Hard Drives.

What is interesting is that there is a set of people actively testing devices and mapping the frequencies where destructive interference is caused.  Apparently SSD technology is immune to this kind of attack because it doesn't rely on spinning platters or head seeks.

Thinking from a fraud perspective, hopefully SSD manufactures don't get the "bright idea" to add this noise to their online ads background music!  🙂

Enjoy!
