Massive network outage causes disruption in Canada

Hi All

It is estimated that 25% of the network capacity was disrupted in Canada, causing issues with payments and various other services such a telephone calls.

"A massive Rogers outage is causing widespread disruption in Canada due to lack of mobile service, inability to process payment card transactions, and impacting 911 emergency services."

Well not too sure where the author of the piece got some of his information but I was out on Friday (yes I live in Canada. in Ontario).

Grocery stores/drug stores/etc. were able to process credit card payments or take cash.  Depending on the network supplier, some were even able to take debit cards.  Lottery kiosks were functioning.

If you were fortunate enough to have a different internet provider, the day was pretty normal.  Was it an inconvenience, sure

911 was in fact functioning.  Folks with cell service on Rogers or Fido, just couldn't use it or if you were like me and have OOMA on your cell phone you could get it whilst connected to the Internet.  Folks have always had the ability to call 911 from landlines.

Was it a bad day for folks that use Rogers. cellular...........YES but it was a worst day for companies that rely on Rogers as their ISP.  What's missing in the story is that some major businesses in Canada lost the ability to do eCommerce or could not receive or send emails.

Image the thousands/millions of dollars lost by companies who rely on Rogers as their ISPs.

With the outage being a fault of ROGERS, will the clients and customers of ROGERS, especially the e-commerce firms, be compensated? This is why every contract must have a strong SLA to deal with uptime less than 5 nines (99.999%). There should be some form of compensation for the affected customers.

@olatunikeOne would certainly think compensation would be a major factor to the loyalty of current customers or them moving to a more dependable provider.
