I know! Let's release burning lanterns during fire season!

Paper lanterns are so pretty, aren't they?

But it is a group thing, a celebration - people simply do not think of the consequences, or the associated risks.   Take Drones for instance, you may complain about them, but legally you cannot shoot them out of the sky, because they disturb you or your privacy - they are the legal property of the owner.   So what do you shoot the Owner and then a whole cascade of consequences follow through.

License lanterns, apply GPS and IoT to them?

A better solution would be to require a local "lantern permit" or at the very least to let local authorities know about the planned "release". Not that I am big on over regulation but sometimes common or uncommon sense needs to take hold or am I asking too much?

High pressure napalm hoses to shoot them down, burning the paper envelope seem like a proportionate and reasonable control...

I did not shoot the drone out of the sky officer, I was just practicing my skeet shooting! It must have veered into the path of my clay target.

Seriously, this begins the whole argument of if you "own" a piece of property how much of the air above it or the ground below it do you "own". If I am digging in my yard and find out that you have a large oil deposit below your house, can I legally drill diagonally from my yard to your yard in order to get to the oil?

I remember reading a story of how a certain developer could not get a home owner to sell so they started building their casino right around the house (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vera_Coking)

Eventually they tried to take the property through eminent domain but lost. In the picture you can see how they built it right next to her house and probably could have built over top of it, but I don't know what the regulations stipulated.
