Professionalizing the world of cybersecurity education and training is a major focus area for the UK Government, especially in the new realities we find ourselves in.
It included plans in its National Cyber Security Strategy in 2016 to develop the cyber security profession, including creating a UK Cyber Security Council to focus on professional development, professional ethics, thought leadership, influence and outreach. Late last year, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport commissioned the creation of the Council through a consortium of cyber security professional bodies – including (ISC)² –known as the Cyber Security Alliance.
(ISC)² has been diligently working alongside other Alliance volunteers to build the UK Cyber Security Council. It is set to commence operations in April 2021. As that start date moves every closer, the time has come to begin appointing personnel that will lead, represent and guide the Council in its on-going operations.
The Council is looking to appoint a Chair, a Treasurer and another Trustee to form the Council’s Board of Trustees. This is a great opportunity for (ISC)² members to participate in the evolution of the cybersecurity sector in the UK at the highest level and shape major decisions about professional training, certification, ethics and industry standards.
These appointments will be instrumental in transitioning the Council from the current in-progress Project to an operational and incorporated charitable entity. Furthermore, they will be responsible for the governance of the Council and all its activities.
The role of a Council Trustee is closely aligned with the ethics and values of an (ISC)² member – they will be committed to embedding good governance principles and practices to attract and effectively use resources, promote a strong risk culture and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations. The founding board members will also be responsible for the recruitment and appointment of the Chief Executive and any other trustees as required.
