For the past few years I've been giving a presentation at various conferences entitled "Hell No Barbie," using the example of "connected" toys as an introductory example of the dangers of unfettered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. So the reports that Amazon, and other retailers, have stopped selling one specific group of them, is somewhat welcome news.
Not that I am entirely opposed to IoT. But I think we need a lot more consideration about the security aspects of what we connect to, well, everything. I don't think this one boycott will automatically put things right, but hopefully this might be a start, as manufacturers take note that if you don't think about security before you build, you might have trouble selling it afterwards.
(I think the "recording Furby" myth was eventually disproved, but did anyone ever actually find out how it did produce the sounds it made?)
