Breaking up Facebook?

A number of states, and the US federal government, launched two antitrust lawsuits against Facebook.  The fear is that Facebook has built a massive user base, as well as a portfolio of apps that may stifle the tech marketplace.

Or, is Facebook going to break up the US government before it becomes too powerful? ...

The news reports focus only on FB owning Instagram and WhatsApp. Making FB see these off will do almost nothing to reduce the power FB exercises in censoring both by commission and omission information on the Net. WhatsApp and Instagram simply overlap with FB Messenger as a communication medium. FB Pages are much more insidious. It is distressing how many small businesses, churches, ands clubs think they are reaching the whole internet with a FB page.

Sadly, a huge amount of the population actually believe FB and the Internet (or WWW) are synonymous.

As for your second linked article, I think it necessary to point out to some of our non-North American members that The Onion is a satire site, known for outrageous articles that the New China News Agency, among others, have thought to be a real news site, often passing on the content of TheOnion articles without attribution, as if real. .

Attributing The Onion as real news is precious. 🤣

Congrats CraginS! You leveled up from Advocate III to Fun Police IV.

All kidding aside, probably a good idea to point that out before it gets out of hand.

I always said, from the moment I first saw it, that Facebook was going to divide
the Internet. Now we have a whole bunch of Facebook users who think that
Facebook *IS* the Internet, and Internet users who can't figure out how to post
on Facebook and make the posting available to everyone *off* Facebook.

The vast accumulations of knowledge--or at least of information--
deposited by the nineteenth century have been responsible for an
equally vast iqnorance. When there is so much to be known, when
there are so many fields of knowledge in which the same words are
used with different meanings, when every one knows a little about
a great many things, it becomes increasingly difficult for anyone
to know whether he knows what he is talking about or not. And
when we do not know, or when we do not know enough, we tend

It seems like a good time to remind people of an oldie but a goodie from The Onion...

I misread the subject and thought I was about to read about all the wonderful people who have taken the step to break up with Facebook.

10 years ago I deleted my account and have "no regerts."

Yep. Do a "soft split" before you're forced to and establish a direction for each branch individually that all ends up going in the same direction as the other branches. It's a smart move if you've got an agenda you want see though. If you get everything ready when things are going well you'd be a lot stronger if/when you're forced to split up the company. It was a very smart move.

You can take a break from someone on Facebook when you change your relationship status to single, divorced or leave it blank. You can also take a break from anyone you're friends with on Facebook.

Breaking up is hard to do.

I still have my Facebook account. I regularly check in on it. About every six
months or so. I get a constant stream of "friend requests" from people I don't
know ... (If I get really desperate some time I may try to figure out how to post
something on Facebook and still make it world readable ...)
