Blockchain vs Deepfakes vs Magic

Deepfakes are a growing issue, and people want to know how to fight it.

One suggestion is to use blockchain.

Now, there is nothing wrong with this suggestion, except that it won't solve the problem.  Existing graphic and video formats will not require (and sometimes not even accommodate) such blockchain verification, and it would take a very long time to create new formats that do and get everyone to agree to use them.  In the meantime, a lot of bad people could create a lot of troublesome deepfakes.  (Like these.)

Blockchain has become a magic term.  Like "cloud" and "IPS" a lot of people don't really know what's involved, but assume it will solve all their problems.  It won't.

(I still want to get the T-shirt that says, "No, blockchain is not the answer.")

@rsladeI agree - it is a term banded around as frequently as Decentralised Identity (DIDs), but once again the majority of the problems are simply the fact that technology cannot support and the associated processes do not exist - but there is plenty of myth, black magic, and marketing hype to keep it going.

Well this article cuts to the real issue of Blockchain:  Read and digest:

https://medium.com/@kaistinchcombe/decentralized-and-trustless-crypto-paradise-is-actually-a-medieva...

"Blockchain is not only crappy technology but a bad vision for the future. Its failure to achieve adoption to date is because systems built on trust, norms, and institutions inherently function better than the type of no-need-for-trusted-parties systems blockchain envisions. That’s permanent: no matter how much blockchain improves it is still headed in the wrong direction."

Has PKI saved the world?   no

Has cloud (whatever that is) saved the world? no

Will blockchain save tiger world? no

Funny, we've had hypesters promising all of them would save the world..

Even very smart techies are not immune from the OOOO, SHINY! syndrome.
