I've still got all my old hard drives. When I recycle a computer, it goes out without a drive. A UBC study, some years back, found all kinds of data on recycled drives.
These days you need to take similar precautions with your phone. A teenager who traded in her iPhone had her photos and social media accounts show up in someone else's hands.
(Oh, and since phones have SSDs instead of hard drives, you have to make sure that you know whether the memory is the type that is almost impossible to recover, or the type that is almost impossible to erase ...)
