Apple, Facebook, and privacy

Apple and Facebook seem to be fighting about privacy.  Particularly your privacy.

I find this really interesting.  A while ago I was asked to research and do a presentation into differential privacy, and, of course, Apple came up.  Apple has been promoting itself as "the privacy company," and differential privacy seems to be one of the things they say they are doing.  Although they seem to be using it only in very limited and rather silly ways.  And I find it kind of interesting that Apple says they are promoting your privacy.  Not that they have ever been a really egregious vendor in terms of selling your data, but they have certainly always made every effort to ensure that they do the very least that they can in terms of open systems so that, if you are an Apple user, you really find it much easier to stay within the Apple "family."  (I'll be doing the differential privacy presentation again, as part of the VanTUG Security Series, on April 20th, and I do deal with how Apple is using differential privacy.)

Facebook, of course, is one of the most egregious of vendors when it comes to selling your data and privacy, so I wonder why they chose this particular topic to fight over ...

Its' all about the marketing. Apple has declared it self to be the customers' privacy protector. Facebook has to respond on this market front. But remember that Facebook has always treated all of their users as if those with FB user account holders are self-absorbed idiots, totally incapable of understanding the FB market plan: they are the product, not the customer. ZuckerFace lies blatantly to Congressional committees with the same straight face he has used on FB users since he started its predecessor site in college.

And he continue to act as if they all believe the lies.

Thus, his "we are your privacy company" market move by FB is nothing more than a response to Apple's move.
