Looking for a first job in Infosec
Hi I have Passed
- Google Cybersecurity
- ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Associate™
- ISC2 CC
- OPSWAT Introduction to Critical Infrastructure Protection (ICIP)
I’m currently based in Bradford, UK, and while I’m working as a bus driver at the moment, I’m eager to make the leap into the information security field—a career I’m truly passionate about.
Right now, I’m preparing for CompTIA Security+ and planning to pursue the CGRC and SSCP certifications afterward. My goal is to gain hands-on experience and put my knowledge to work in a practical setting.
If you have any advice, opportunities, or recommendations for someone breaking into cybersecurity, I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks for reading, and I look forward to connecting with others in the community!

It'd also be worth attending your local OWASP chapter and BCS meetings if these are run in your area, as they'll provide opportunities to network and understand how other got into the fields of IT and cyber.

@Tanuki Its nice you're getting learning and certifications, but work on getting actual experience, even if its in adjacent IT roles, or doing volunteer work.
ALSO look to network with infosec peers. Look for local groups of ISSA, ISC2, ISACA, or homegrown groups. See if there is a BSides Conference you can attend as many will have a job/career track that can help. Networking is a vital way to find roles.

It sounds like you are getting the right qualifications. I’m trying to get in to cybersecurity myself but I’m already in the IT industry. My advice would be to get in to a 1st line role like help desk because then you gain practical experience with systems and how they work which will benefit you when you move in to a security role. It is better to have experience of configuring firewalls and policies within Microsoft 365 than learning everything from courses. Get you foot in the door then it becomes easier to get to where you want. It might not be the fast way but it is more beneficial.
