Is there interest in starting a ISC2 Bowie (MD) Chapter?

Are there any folks interested in starting a ISC2 Bowie, Maryland Chapter?  The Chapters that exist in the DMV area are pretty far from Bowie and I am pretty sure Bowie has fair amount of CISSPs and other IT professionals.

Hi Donnie,

Thank you for your question!

Since Bowie falls in between two other chapters (the Baltimore Chapter - approximately 28 miles northeast, and the National Capitol Region Chapter - approximately 20 miles southwest) it is unlikely that there is a need for another chapter in that area at this time.

The Bowie area currently falls in the boundaries for the Baltimore Chapter.

If you would like to reach out to either of these nearby chapters, I am sure that they would be willing to give you information about their chapter, upcoming activities, and may be willing to discuss bringing their activities closer to where you live. Here are the chapters' contact information:

Baltimore Chapter

Contact: Brian D. Cox

National Capitol Region Chapter

Thank you for the information. I'll reach out to them to see what they are doing.

Hi ,

I am interested in a new chapter in the Bowie area as you rightly said that the two other chapters are far away so there is a need for a new chapter. I am a new graduate in information technology and interested to join a chapter that is closer to me.

Thanks

Paula,

You may not be familiar with the nature of traffic in the greater Washington DC area. The two distances you describe can easily mean travel of 60 to 90 minutes during prime chapter meeting times after work. If there are enough potential members near Bowie, that could well support a third chapter.

getting from BOwie to downtown DC could mean 2 hours travel.

Over to @DGreen and @nsohbih13 to comment further.

(I moved away from the DC/Baltimore area last spring.)

60-90 minutes in traffic doesn't sound so bad.  I have my choice of 3 chapters, all about 120 miles from my house, which is pretty much guaranteed 2+ hours before considering traffic.  If one looks at the chapter directory, it is clear that others have it even worse than I and that @DGreen might also have an option to the east.

I dont think it's about better or worst experiences in traffic or options.
I just know there are a lot of CISSPs in this area and there is/was
potential for a lot of participation if a 1.5 hour round trip commute
barrier was removed from the equation. This is an old thread and there
wasn't any interest in the idea from ISC2 so I dropped it...and don't
attend those other chapters for the same reason.

Respectfully,

Donnie Green Jr., CISSP, CCISO

For me, a 4 hour round trip is a show stopper.
