Which Star Trek character is your CISO?

As life imitates art, organizations today are embarking on a digital transformation journey that is likely to take them far from the known cyber universe. Much like the Starship Enterprise, organizations must rely on a broad range of tools and talent to accomplish their mission and live another day.

As our world is increasingly dependent on IT, OT and data, CISOs are key to helping the captain steer the ship toward the solar winds of profit while avoiding the plethora of environmental obstacles and sentient attacks that seem to appear around every corner.

Digging a bit deeper this article reveals several real-world lessons that security leaders can apply to their daily lives.

  • Lt. Worf — Prepare Your Incident Response
  • Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge — Ensure Business Technology Is Resilient
  • Lt. Cmdr. Data — Connect the Security Dots
  • Counselor Deanna Troi — Tap Into Your People Skills
  • Cmdr. William Riker, aka No. 1 — Act as a Trusted Adviser
  • Enterprise Computer — The Voice of Reason?

Noting that this list only uses ST:TNG, I think we can have some fun by adding to the list from other ST series.

Star Trek

  • Captain Kirk — Hack back at once!
  • Mr. Spock — Reverse engineer the malicious code
  • Scotty (Chief Engineer Scott) — Keep all the hardware refreshed and patched.
  • Dr. Bones McCoy — Dammit, I'm an IT professional, not a budgeteer!

ST:DSN

  • Captain Sisko — Convene the Security Committee!
  • Odo — Obscure all our databases so their significance cannot be discerned
  • Dax — Embed key information in benign files.
  • Quark — Improve the budget by selling all our surplus and old h/w

OK, that is a start. Now folks can add characters from these or other ST series, as well as improve on my initial suggestions above.

How about:

ST: Voyager

  • Captain Janeway – can we ever get out data back
  • Chakotay - our data must be protected at all costs
  • Tuvok – all personnel will take security awareness training
  • Harry Kim – I am new here and not sure what to do
  • Seven of Nine – resistance is futile

I agree add/change as needed.
