Based on the US Congress hosting hearings with social media companies this past summer, when will a US law similar to Europe's GDPR be implemented? Would it be a similar model? Or are there any lessons learned from the GDPR, yet?

Brendan,
While we may see more legislation explicitly protecting privacy in the USA, I do not believe we will see anything close to the GDPR model in the US any time in the foreseeable future. The different approaches to government and the economy between the EU and US with regard to socialism versus capitalism and also between big central government versus limited government are the basis for my observation. For a more complete discussion on this topic, see my blog post, Will the U.S. Adopt the EU GDPR for Privacy Protection?

...Syntax error: you used "privacy" and "US" in the same subject line ...

Please note that Grandpa Rob, the Canadian, and I, the 'Merican, wrote our replies in parallel, with no collaboration, and slightly different levels of cynicism and snark. Still, we pretty much agreed on the core answer:
Naaaaw.
