"Passwords are like underwear: don’t let people see it, change it very often, and you shouldn’t share it with strangers.” – Chris Pirillo

In 1961, the first password used on a computer was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After 60 years today, the use of passwords is as prevalent as it was when it was first developed.

Passwords serves as a first line of defense for unauthorized access to computer systems. Although it is now a common practice for computer systems to hide passwords as they are typed, a wide spread of computer users still use weak passwords today.

Passwords should be chosen so that they are hard for attackers to guess or discover.

Below are some tips to making your passwords more secured and creating stronger passwords

Tips on Securing your Password

  • Passwords should be changed frequently in 30, 60 or 90 days however the case suitable
  • Passwords should be long, nothing short of 8 or 10 characters
  • Passwords should consist of a mix of alphanumeric characters. Mix up symbols, numbers and letters (upper and lower cases)
  • Passwords should not be a dictionary word or a combination of dictionary words
  • Passwords should not be reused. Using a Password Manager will be of great help
  • Passwords should not be shared. Passwords are personal and should be kept private
  • Passwords should not contain personal information like name, date of birth, age, pet's name, child name, favorite color, etc.
  • Passwords should not be used alone without a multi-factor Authentication (MFA) mechanism (e.g. OTP, smart card, biometrics, push notifications, etc.)
