What a mesh ...

Peoplenet[1] lives!

Well, maybe not quite, but it seems to be getting closer ...

[1] - using individual devices to build ad hoc mesh networks so as to build an internet and communications infrastructure with no corporately controlled backbones or single points of failure/censorship ...

Clever is the word.   Imagine what they could do with 5G and full Mesh, with IoT and smart devices?

Hmm. I am reminded of the cooperative FIDONET born in the 1980's, totally funded by hundreds of individual bulletin board system operators out of their homes, who provide a computer, modem, phone line, and pay for the late night long distance connections to pass mail across the nation.

I was using FIdonet in 1984 on my nifty little Radio Shack Color Computer and a 300 baud manual dial modem. Grandpa Rob @rslade were you on Fido back in the day?

(I had thought FIDONET was thing of the past, but in grabbing the link above, discovered it is still operating!)
