According to reports, the latest version of the Spectre attack can even give access to the firmware. You're not even supposed to able to get there from the kernel.
I'm sorry, but I did warn you about this. Seventeen years ago I was teaching that multi-core CPUs were subject to race conditions, and both Spectre and Meltdown are simply specialized types of race conditions ...
(It's too bad that basic computer architecture seems to have been reduced in the CBK ...)
