Well, shredding companies have been at it for a while. But now apparently the US Navy has at least two tons of storage of highly sensitive data that needs to be burned "to ash."
In one of my seminars, one of the candidates told us that part of his job was to take drives out to the firing range, and, one by one, take them and set off a thermite bomb on top of them. (He told us that the amusement value of this exercise was somewhat lessened by the fact that, the whole time, there was someone there with a loaded rifle--pointed at him.) But I suppose when you have two tons of the stuff, you want something a bit less time-consuming ...
