IBM quits facial recognition

IBM won't be doing any more sales of facial recognition, and is saying maybe nobody else should, either.

Of course, while they mention racial bias and government/law enforcement surveillance, the decision may be influenced by the fact that facial recognition isn't making them any money at the moment ...

Its really difficult to create such a system without injecting some sort of bias one way or another. Add to that the implications of possible misuse by the authorities, privacy lawsuits and organizational misuse place this topic right up there with GPS data. You want to track the number of times and for how long an employee goes to the rest room each day? This is a good place to start.

I would err on the side of caution here and say just because something is possible doesn't mean it should be done.

May change my mind on this topic but doubtful I would be so inclined.

Maybe they should go into facial mask recognition.

Then they could flag violators who wear masks incorrectly or inappropriately.

I suspect it may not work too well during/after lock down; with all the beards, long hair and face masks covering half of peoples faces.

I suspect I'm going to have to change my nickname from "Grandpa Rob" to "Santa Rob" ...

Ah, yes, had a few of those 'what's that on your face' comments on skype calls myself.
