Google screening for nuisance calls

Google is adding a new feature to its phone that will screen for telemarketers and such.  Sounds like it will be based on the Google Assistant.

 

I can't wait ...

I wonder if telemarketers that also advertise on google will somehow get left off the nuisance database.

 

I'm also interested to see if users will be held legally accountable for a commitment made by an AI bot like their Duplex system.  Two potential (albeit unlikely) scenarios:

 

1.  A telemarketer initiates the phone call to sell something and Duplex, trying to keep them on the line longer, answers yes to a free 30-day trial with automatic enrollment without a formal cancellation.  A month later bills start rolling in for the monthly membership fee.

 

2.  Duplex makes an appointment or reservation somewhere but the user misses the notification and thus, the appointment.  Many times there are penalties for no-shows like fines or suspension of services.

Personally I enjoy the calls from call centers in India where you can hear many more callers in various stages of their dialogue interrogating the unsuspecting callee letting them know that their Windows platform reported back a virus to their server and for a nominal fee remove it from their computer.  After I get my chuckles in I sober up and let them know that I am IT security professional and if they stay on the line for a few more seconds I will have traced back to their call center so I can turn it over to the FBI. Click!

 

We will end up with one automated call center battling another automated call center.

Interesting point. As usual, the chief cause of computer problems is computer
"solutions" ...

"Tech support" scam calls to our house tend to be very short since, when they say
there is a problem with our computer, we ask, "Which one?" That tends to end
the call.

(If they ever did get to the part about there being a virus on the computer, I would
probably acknowledge that there are over a thousand in my zoo directory, and
would they kindly not mess with them since I need them for research ...)
