As fun as it is to bash on Facebook, it is naive to equate renaming an account with entering witness protection. The intent of renames are to address the common cases of marriage/divorce and changing nicknames, in which scenarios, updating all the references helps keep the world sane.
If the goal is to "disappear" one really needs new accounts or to drop off social media altogether, as the article suggests.

I agree that the whole concept of "right to be forgotten," in all it's forms, is completely bizarre. But the fact that this is a bug, which Facebook has no intention of fixing, is also rather bizarre ...
