You break off contact. You block the Facebook account of your ex. Maybe you even go so far as to change your name.
Your Facebook accounts are still linked. And Facebook finks on you. And they don't plan to do anything to fix the problem ...
As fun as it is to bash on Facebook, it is naive to equate renaming an account with entering witness protection. The intent of renames are to address the common cases of marriage/divorce and changing nicknames, in which scenarios, updating all the references helps keep the world sane.
If the goal is to "disappear" one really needs new accounts or to drop off social media altogether, as the article suggests.
