A huge attack on Washington State and its unemployment system netted hundreds of millions of dollars for a gang (probably based in Nigeria). The gang probably used personal data gathered from previous data breaches, and possibly phishing attacks, to generate huge numbers of phony claims. The US Secret Service issued an alert, also noting that North Carolina, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Florida were also subject to attacks. Part of the scam, in this case, relied upon the fact that regular postal mail was used as part of the check on fraud in the system, but, due to the pandemic, postal mail was being delayed.
