Check your conferences ...

The 2020 Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law will not be held in Las Vegas during May this year.  Due to coronavirus concerns.

(I'm speaking at a couple in March and I'm getting a wee bit antsy about last-minute cancellations ...)

@rslade   About time we reduced the carbon foot print flying, and decided to use remote presentation modes during this episode.  Or will this result in a spate of DDOS attacks?

Actually, one of our major local conferences is in a couple of weeks, and I was
quite impressed with the steps they are taking. Possibly because of coronavirus
concerns, over 90% of the registrants are relatively local this year. They have
checked, and only four are registered from possible problem areas. They have
contacted those, and asked them to come at least one day early, and have arranged
for special medical checks for them. They are also laying on hand sanitizer and
other preventative supplies.

Since when is passing a "medical check" required to attend a conference? Since COVID-19, I get it. Is consent given at registration time? Soon the police will be carrying digital thermometers and test kits. We already see door-to-door searches and mass quarantine "camps" in China. Will Vancouver be next? Welcome to the socialist state.

@rslade  It only gets worst, just had word, we cannot travel from Australia to New Zealand period, and vice versa and one cannot travel even to Samoa without a Medical check three days from departure.   And if you come via Italy, Iran or China - put yourself in quarantine for 14 days at least.  Whilst the "Doomsday Preppers" all go into panic mode buying Toilet paper, Washing Powder and anything else they can get their hands on.

What is wrong with people?  It is hard enough getting them to put a Civil Defense Emergency Pack together, suddenly COVID-19 occurs and panic buying goes on.   Get some context, its only a cold....

Even had to go to a Powhiri (Welcome ceremony) yesterday for Pathway to Technology (P-Tech) and not allowed to follow protocol i.e. Hongi - touch noses.

Suddenly, I have become a host and speaker all rolled in one.

I won't be going to InfoSec Europe this year.  It's not that I'm afraid of an epidemic personally, just that if you have frail elderly members of your extended family probably best not to pass something like that on.  And who knows, later in the year freedom of movement could be restricted [not a Brexit joke ;)]

I prefer to think of it as "having a reasonable concern for your neigbours and
community under the circumstances," but your mileage may vary ...
