Re: How to Enable the Community in 2018 ( (ISC)² Community Subscription Update)

Earn the (ISC)2 Enable badge for demonstrating superior engagement that enables the (ISC)2 Community to advance our industry through the months of August and September.

Enable_badge.png

To qualify, you must complete these 4 activities:

  • Receive 1 kudo
  • Give 3 kudos
  • Make 3 posts
  • Tag 3 (ISC)2 Community posts

Why Tagging?  Tagging posts in the Community helps others to find content quickly. A good way to tag an article is to think of other ways people may talk about the topic. Here’s an example – talking about a Chief Information Security Officer?  You might want to tag the post with “CISO” so other users can easily search for other articles related to this topic.

Why Kudos?  Kudos can have many meanings, but they work best when you want to show someone you read through their article, appreciate (or agree) with their insights, give a thank you for supplying the information, or if you just want to say “Job well done!”

Thank you for your commitment to Enrich. Enable. Excel. with us! Your participation helps peers and fellow (ISC)2 members remain well-rounded and informed as cybersecurity professionals.

So, adding synonyms? Probably a good idea: I've been having problems recently
searching something and needing the exact wording ...

Actually, most people use the acronyms, so you're more likely to need to add the
expansions 🙂

@SamanthaO_isc2, as I mentioned in earlier posts on a related thread, the Enrich, Enable, Excel program only serves to increase participation on the Community.

I would suggest starting another program --- in parallel with / subsequent to this --- whose objective is to recognize contribution, with the eligibility criteria & requirements to earn badges more stringent than the current program.

This should make use of more than just AI, and include things such as:

  1. Moderator approvals: To my knowledge, the system’s AI won’t be able to gauge posts just by searching for specific words in them. (If the community actually has an AI system that's capable of this, I stand corrected.)
  2. Nominations & votes: Moderators should nominate members, designate specific members to vote, & again, take the final call before 'awards.'

Hello @Shannon

You are correct in that this badge campaign that we are running throughout the rest of the year is to help increase engagement on the Community.  We have found that many people enjoy earning these badges and it helps to get people who may just be reading to also engage with their fellow Community members.

Our team is working on a larger initiative with regards to some of the things that you mentioned and we should be able to start talking about it in the coming months once we have finalized some more pieces to this.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly or replying in this thread.

Best,

Samantha

Sounds you are describing kudos. Maybe badges could be issued when somebody receives 1, 25, 50, etc. kudos.

Although Kudos are fairly simplistic, they do serve as a basic indicator of above quality of contribution.  IMHO, their most significant limitation is the lack of "negative Kudos" (i.e. thumbs down), so the count biases towards affirmation, rather than being a community "vote". It also suffers (as does all voting) with being a simple yes/no, rather than a more nuanced measurement.

Although one can search for comments that have been kudoed (it is under advanced search >> metadata), I know of no way to currently focus your browsing to only include comments with a certain number of kudos (although I bet we could accomplish it with tampermonkey Smiley Happy)

Slashdot is an example of a community that does a great job with kudos (which they call "score").  They start with a unique moderation system that ranks comments on a -1 to 5 scale.  Readers can then set their "threshold" to hide comments that don't have sufficient rank. Their FAQ does describe some of the obstacles they overcame, which is useful reading for somebody considering a quality of contribution program.

You may think you're very clever, young man, but it's still badgers, all the way

Ah, this takes me back to research following my psychology days, and the studies

@rslade, pardon me for leaving out my intentions, old wise one --- I'll attempt to state them here.  Man Tongue

I don't condone the use of badges by the community. While many of us have criticized & pointed out its shortcomings multiple times, we have no way of knowing if or when that's going to have any effect.

Assuming we can't do away with the system, rather than merely expressing dissatisfaction, I think it makes sense to recommend improving it...

I should note, in passing, that, while I have more than fulfilled the requirements for the Enable badge, unlike last time with the Enrich badge and the unending stream of notices that I got one, I haven't yet received an Enable badge ...

Hello Samantha,

A key question that every individual either studying, practicing or learning security asks is "How to Cyber Security", where it starts and where it ends? Which is the best frame work/tools/strategy for cyber security?

If a program can be launched where periodic webinar can be arranged by specialists in Cyber Security then I feel many people will benefit and the program will become popular for the value it adds. All this will eventually benefit the CISSP, CCSP and such similar programs.

Thank you,

Nagarajan

Received lots of kudos ...

Gave at least half a dozen ...

Posted, well, more than 3 ...

Tags?  Plenty of tags ...

Nope, still haven't got it ...

(And, when I went to post, it told me "Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed. Please review the message and submit the message when you are satisfied."  Well, *I* didn't add any HTML, so the editor must have put it in there in the first place ...  I guess the editor just messes with anybody who complains ... )

Hello @nagarajan

We have many different webinars that are aimed at helping to further educate members and some that are also available to non-members. Some of those Webinars are posted on this board by Tim, if you want updates on those you can subscribe to the (ISC)2 Updates board. You can also find a list of webinars on our events calendar by narrowing down to online events. Take a look here

Hello @rslade

I apologize for the delay in receiving the Enable badge. You should now have it on your profile and should have gotten a notification just a short time ago.

If you have any further question on this, please let me know.
