Robodebt - Australian Royal Commission conclusions: Privacy Impact assessments and AI, Automation

Hi All

Here is a full account of the Australian Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme, it is too big to upload, so I will give you the direct link, for those who are interested.

"Known locally as "Robodebt", it was an automated government scheme which incorrectly demanded welfare recipients pay back benefits.  People received letters saying they owed thousands of dollars in debt, based off an incorrect algorithm.  More than half a million Australians were affected by the policy."

The Australian Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme has concluded.

This report provides a reminder on how important it is to fully explore and manage risks when developing or using AI and Automated Decision-Making systems. This also shows how critical it is to have human agency in decision-making. Undertaking privacy impact assessment/algorithmic impact assessments that unpack these risks is critical if an agency is considering using this kind of technology.
