John has asked a question directly relevant to our field of information security. The issues involve protection of proprietary intellectual property as well as a huge insider threat situation. In the USA, we have seen multiple prosecutions of Chinese nationals attending universities as both students and faculty researchers, who are, in fact, members of the Peoples Liberation Army. Those individuals have been identified as sending research information improperly back to China. We have also seen multiple US university research professors accepting large research grants from Chinese entities without either the grantee or the university notifying the US State Department of these financial relationships. Finally, there have been multiple arrests of US researchers who had been on the Chinese payroll apprehended with such sensitive research data as they tried to leave the country to fly to China.
I won't bother to list news article links here, since they are easily discoverable with simple web searches.

Here's a report from the FBI on the threat posed to the US.
