No Local ISC2 Chapter?

Passed the exam and have my endorsement in awaiting processing and thought I would look for local ISC2 activities in Indiana.

Either I don't know how to use the web page or there are no chapters listed in the state of Indiana.

Since I'm new I know I can't charter a chapter, but I have a few friends who have been CISSPs long enough to do it.

Does anyone have any experience starting a chapter? How hard will it be to meet the CEC requirements without a local chapter?

Re: No Local ISC2 Chapter?

I went myself and took a look and no, I do not see a chapter in Indiana. If you can find others with interest in Information security maybe consider starting a chapter. There are many other chapter who are willing to help charter new chapters.

I am going to link in @James to this discussion.  James is the President of the Orlando chapter (one of the busiest) and may be able to provide guidance on what it takes.

Also looping in @AndreaMoore and ask that she pass this along internally to the Chapter folks

Re: No Local ISC2 Chapter?

Some of the founding members of the San Diego Chapter are still with the Chapter. I;m sure they would be willing to share their knowledge in getting a Chapter going with you.

Our meeting are being held virtually so if you're free on Thursday night from 6 to 8 PM PT, 8 to 10 PM CT you can join in on the virtual meeting. I'm posting the information in a new post here.

There may also be local cyber security chapters for other organizations that could possibly assist.

Aksar,

Since there are no (ISC)2 chapters in Indiana, I urge you to connect with the local ISSA chapters. There are two in indiana, but I do not know how active they are.

http://ci-issa.org

https://nein-issa.com

(ISC)2 is actually late to the chapter game. ISSA is a FOUNDING MEMBER of the original International Information System Security Certification Consortium, which was a consortium of membership groups, not individuals. The ISSA chapter system has been around a long time and many are quite active with programs for members. Since ISSA helped create the (ISC)2 in order to have a neutral certification (CISSP), they do not run any certification themselves; instead chapters support members' effort s to complete CISSP and any other security certs the chapter membership wishes to pursue.

Other groups to look for to support your professional development and networking include OWASP and even ICASA.

Good luck!

Re: No Local ISC2 Chapter?

Hi Askar,

Thanks for your message and your interest in the (ISC)² Chapter Program. Im Paula - and I manage the chapters in the NAR and LATAM regions here at (ISC)².

(ISC)² Chapters provide members with the opportunity to build a local network of peers to share knowledge, exchange resources, collaborate on projects, and create new ways to earn CPE credits!

You are correct that there is not a chapter in Indiana currently; however, we definitely encourage you or anyone you may know to start a chapter in your local area. Please feel free to begin by reviewing the START A CHAPTER page and the CHARTERING CHAPTER GUIDELINES, which explain more about the chartering process. If you or someone you know meets the qualifications and would like to submit a petition for a new chapter, you can do so in Q1-2021 (January), when the petition period re-opens for the NAR region.

If you have any questions or need further information, please reach out to us at chapters@isc2.org

Re: No Local ISC2 Chapter?

As well as the suggestions that others have made, you can attend (free!) the next Vancouver Chapter meeting, on December 11th.  (Since we are all virtual, these days, it doesn't matter where you are  🙂

If you attend the meeting, make sure that you make contact with Orvin, one of our past presidents.  He was the one who shepherded the chapter formation process.  It took about a year, he got pretty much zero help from ISC2 HQ, and there was a huge amount of documentation to produce.  It's not for the faint of heart.  But he persevered, and he did it.  He can give you all the details.
