Can I get CPE credits for a GIAC certification renewal?

I recently passed the renewal exam for my GIAC GWAPT certification and was wondering if I could apply that renewal effort towards my CPE count for my ISC2 CISSP certification. Is that work eligible does anyone know?

I thought taking a certification exam counted for CPEs

The time spent studying to take the exam can be counted, but the time spent taking the exam itself can't.

A new version of the CPE handbook was released recently but this guideline remains the same...

From the Group A examples on page 9:

"Self-study related to research for a project or preparing for a certification examination"
