I'm curious,  With these jobs that require a clearance do they work through that process with you or is the applicant on their own?  Is it even reasonably possible to apply/get a security clearance without a sponsor?

My understanding is that it's not possible to get clearance without a sponsor (or military service).  Some companies are willing to hire a person that does not have clearance already and sponsor them, but it comes at great cost to the company and also usually means they either can't let you work or have to pay you for mundane work until the clearance comes through.  In some cases, they are able to let you work under "interim" clearance (which is much quicker to obtain) until your permanent clearance comes through.  Naturally, most companies will only opt for this when the position is hard to fill and/or requires a specific skill set that you possess.

Hey guys - great question.

"Cleared" companies can clear candidates but the process takes a long time. An interim can take between 4 weeks to 12 weeks and the full clearance process can take up to a year. It's not that companies aren't willing to clear candidates but if the position needs a quick fill, then getting someone an interim (or completely cleared) prior to going into the position is not possible.

This particular position requires a TS/SCI Active Clearance. A lot of people will have this if they are currently working for the Federal Government, is an Industry Contractor currently supporting a TS/SCI role, or is in the Military.

Also sorry - forgot to respond regarding a sponsor. A candidate can only be sponsored by the Military, Fed Govt, or a company that is "cleared" and can "clear" candidates. Our company (for example) is a Top Secret DoD "Industry" company, so we are able to sponsor employees to get cleared.
