Hi All,

Today, the global cybersecurity workforce is facing an unusual deficiency, with nearly 4 million jobs unfilled worldwide. The demand for qualified, skilled professionals continues to grow year on year, with no indications of slowing.

ISC2 certifications play a critical role in bridging this gap. They provide both foundational and advanced knowledge, helping experts gain the expertise needed to tackle complex security challenges in diverse industries, from finance and healthcare to government and technology.

By understanding market trends and aligning with the right certifications, such as CISSP, CCSP, CSSLP, SSCP, and sector-specific concentrations, professionals can strategically position themselves to meet the ever-expanding global need for cybersecurity expertise.

If you would like further recommendations or exact wisdom on this topic, please comment on me.

It is fascinating to see how the "unusual deficiency" you mentioned has evolved. As of early 2026, the global cybersecurity workforce gap has actually expanded beyond that 4-million mark, now sitting at approximately 4.8 million unfilled roles according to the latest ISC2 reports.

If you are looking for "exact wisdom," the most significant trend this year is the integration of AI. ISC2 has already begun updating exam outlines to include how AI impacts cloud security and automated threat hunting.

Thanks for sharing..! @milycris

@Blue_bird I really am not a fan of raw numbers taken out of context. I have definitely not seen a number that high on anything that have looked at. The issue with raw numbers is that “schools” use them to take peoples’ money without ever telling them that those are not entry level positions, very profitable. I see a lot of evidence that will be tough to get needed experience around me. AI can handle simple calls but is the avenue that was how people gained experience for progression to the next level(s). So how do they get that experience if AI is handling it? I just had a long discussion with someone studying for their exam that was using AI in a way that they were not thinking or analyzing and destined to fail their exam. Hopefully they figure it out. I also stress what the CC preaches Verify; then trust. It can be a good tool, but too many will let it think for them when the results may be unpredictable.

On a personal level, since I spent 7 years looking for new job (up until recently) despite the many certifications and great experience, these sorts of things give the FALSE impression of jobs just waiting for someone to apply and get, when in reality most job postings are FLOODED with candidates.

We need more nuanced numbers. What TYPES of jobs are needed to be filled? What level, what skills, what industry, etc? Stop saying there are millions of unfilled positions.

@emb021 You know that I agree. Those numbers are part of what I call the big lie and definitely skewed to present an untrue picture of the profession to those with zero knowledge about it. Unfortunately the “schools” use this to make big pay days for themselves. The last brag saw from CompTIA was over 700K certified in Security+ which is kind of an embarrassing brag. So that is the competition in the job market, many probably most, with zero experience. While I work with our folks, I do try to help others outside of work. I have actually had someone ask me after they passed their Security+ where to find get the job like you said like they are waiting and being handed out. I wish there was a way to tell them up front before their time and money are wasted. I know plenty of folks with real experience and is not easy to find a job. I enjoy and am grateful for mine.

@emb021 I got to thinking about this. I have helped others in their job searches but have been fortunate enough to have a great job in a great environment. I am grateful. So I looked a little out of curiosity. The disparity in numbers is crazy but not surprising given subjectivity and biases. I could find the poster’s number but also higher or lower ones. So I went for a kind of neutral site, the Bureau of Labor Statistics from a 2025 report. I do find it interesting that they flushed out the skillsets more. As close as they came appeared to be information security analysts. The other cybersecurity jobs seemed to fall into other categories. I know that some disagree with me about there being entry level jobs in cybersecurity. Where else do we start training them from in our organizations? I emphasize to management that we must train people to replace us. Well, unless they plan to stay forever. https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2025/article/fastest-growing-industry-sector.htm
