Sometimes software updates are the problem and not the solution

Or, there is the, well, not exactly old, saying in our industry, that the chief cause of computer problems is computer "solutions."

One of the members of my family did this one time, just avoiding updates (probably more out of laziness than anything else). At one point the machine bogged down, but, by that time, installing the updates would have been a huge problem.

As it was for these guys. On the other hand, I would say that maintaining a release for that long, without the attendant troubles of the incremental updates, might be convenient, but it is just asking for trouble.

And, if you want to do it, make sure that you lock down the settings for updating, real good.

Those of us that have worked in the OT/ICS world knew this many years ago. In that world each update has to be tested and re-tested before being implemented. We have seen lines taken down by software updates (even those from the manufacturers- read Honeywell, GE, etc, not M$).

This is the prime reason most ICS/OT systems do not get updated regularly (sad to say).

I didn't know the consumer market was getting hit this hard. We use HP computers in our enterprise environment. The problems we see with each update are compatability problems with hundreds of legacy software that's still in use. But occasionally we do need to run the OEM Win 10 build installer on a system to fix corruption.
