I am reminded of the cooperative FIDONET born in the 1980's, totally funded by hundreds of individual bulletin board system operators out of their homes, who provide a computer, modem, phone line, and pay for the late night long distance connections to pass mail across the nation.

I was using FIdonet in 1984 on my nifty little Radio Shack Color Computer and a 300 baud manual dial modem.
