In January 2017, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a report asserting that Tesla's Autosteer driver assistance system reduced crashes, at least the major ones that would cause airbag deployment.

Following an ... interesting ... Freedom of Information Act request, and a followup court case, Quality Control Systems Corporation got access to the actual data--and found that NHTSA had made some foolish and simplistic assumptions that changed the results, just a bit.

It turns out that Autosteer actually increases accidents ... (At least, the versions up to July of 2016. In September 2016, Tesla made significant changes.)
