Ways to control the data companies are mining from you?

We know that social media companies are mining your data. (Facebook, with it's coming integration of Messenger, Whatapp, and Instagram, is only on example.) And then there are other companies that are simply mining every piece of data they can find on you from whatever source.

But going completely off-grid is probably not the answer, if we want the benefits of, for example, health or financial tracking.

So how do we manage our own data in this age of data-mining?

There are some companies making stabs at technologies that can allow us to manage our own data, in some interesting ways.
