One of the comments alleges:

That wasn't a hunter, it was a wildlife photographer husband & wife team stalking the deer. The husband doused himself in elk urine lure & provoke the encounter with the stag for a video made back in the 90's. Nut job but not half as nutty as some hateful comments on this thread

I can't attest to its truthfulness, but it is plausible, particularly if you follow the "Stupid Human Tricks", found in the Darwin Award archives.

My take. Probably not a hunter.

Very likely a hunter would have had a fairly decent knife on their person, and I could absolutely see that coming into play here, especially as there would probably be muscle memory coming into play regards skinning, gutting and butchering if the hunter had been doing it for a while.
