***UPDATE*** Please see my last post. I provisionally passed the in person and experienced none of the issues outlined below that I faced on the online pilot. The in person CISSP is a great exam. ***UPDATE***

Email that I just had to send to my endorser:

Hi -BLANK-,

I am reaching out to express my frustrations with ISC2. I provisionally passed the CISSP "Online Proctored" 6 hour exam in February. 10 weeks later, I am now notified that all the results are invalid, and I will have to retest. I only took the Online version due to the Spokane testing site canceling my in person last minute. Now I will have to retest before the end of July. Additionally, the email indicates that failure to retest or pass will result in a 5 year ban from ISC2.

To be honest, the exam was terrible. I studied hard and I know the material. The questions had double negatives and were deliberately misleading. I vowed to myself that should I pass, I would never recommend the CISSP to anyone. I have read dozens and dozens of reports of similar issues with the in person, with nearly everyone assuming they had failed or were taking the wrong test. When I walked out of the Security+ I felt great! I wish I could say the same for my CISSP experience.

Long story short, I do not need this certification as it is unlikely that I will obtain a government contractor position that would require it. I am struggling to find the rationale to retest and pay dues to an organization that launched a pilot with no ability to process the results, with an exam that is so unnecessarily harrowing, and obtuse towards its patrons.

What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

The CISSP is a challenging exam, and we encourage you to take advantage of the free retake voucher provided. We know it is challenging for candidates to prepare themselves to retake an exam, but if you have the experience and mastery of the subject matter, you should have confidence in your ability to sit for the exam again.

To clarify, not all exam results from the online proctoring are invalid. Most online proctoring pilot participants have moved on to the endorsement process.

The integrity and security of our exams is of the utmost importance to our association and members. There has been an extraordinary level of analysis put into reviewing the exams that were part of the online proctor pilot test, which caused an unexpected delay in processing official results. There are several reasons why exam results may be invalidated, and we encourage you to reach out to Member Services via the instructions provided in your letter.

I demand to know what portion of the following caused my exam to be invalidated:

Pursuant to the (ISC)2 Examination Agreement which you accepted prior to the exam, (ISC)2 may at its sole
discretion revoke any and all certifications you may have earned and ban you from earning future (ISC)2
certifications and decline to score or cancel any Exam under any of the following circumstances: (1) You breach
any of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. (2) (ISC)2 determines, in its sole discretion, that you have
undertaken or participated in any action that compromises the integrity and confidentiality of an Exam or
certification program, or (3) an Exam Irregularity has been identified in connection with your Exam. In the case of
this exam administration your exam result has been invalidated due to the identification of exam irregularity.
Again, pursuant to the (ISC)2 Examination Agreement, this decision is final and cannot be appealed.

None of that applies to my exam or exam performance. I DO appeal.

Additionally, I am still unable to schedule an exam at the only testing center close to me due to covid through July. How am I supposed to proceed?

Hmmmm. Well, you've actually got two issues, here: the recent implementation
of an online version of the exam, and the exam itself ...

Ooh, harsh. Major bummer. Hopefully, ISC2 offered a free retest?

Fortunately, since you passed it once, you are likely to pass it again, even if it's a
pain to have to re-write.

Say what? *This* is something that sounds entirely new: I've never heard
anybody threatened that way before.

OK, I've heard this before. Most candidates find the exam hard: I generally tell
people that it's the hardest one they are ever likely to face. Worthwhile things
tend to be hard.

The specific exam to schedule will not be found online. As stated within the letter, you will need to contact Pearson VUE by phone to schedule your exam. You can find their country specific contact information at: http://www.pearsonvue.com/isc2/contact/.

Respectfully, there is a very real flaw in the evaluation of exams if my result was invalidated.

I just sent in another email to memberservices3@isc2.org that with all the requested information as I have not yet heard back.

Just to confirm that there were no appointments available at my local testing center, I called in. During the call we confirmed that there are no appointments available through July 31st 2021. What am I supposed to do here? I only took the OP because my local testing center canceled my in person. I do not think it is fair to have to travel 4+ hours (each way) to another testing site or pay for a flight when I provisionally passed with the highest integrity. A review of my exam performance would undoubtedly clear my name from this whole ordeal.

Please let me know how I am to proceed.

All - I was finally able to secure a spot at my local testing center. Today I provisionally passed the in person exam.

Although the online pilot was a truly awful experience, the in person exam was completely different. It was orders of magnitude easier, and all the questions were clearly written. It was nothing, NOTHING, like the online pilot exam.

I was so incredibly stressed out to take in person due to how seemingly impossible the online pilot exam was and was risking a 5 year ban upon failure. I was confident I had passed when the exam ended at 100 questions, and I felt I had applied what I had learned. ISC2 made the right call by no longer offering the online pilot. The in person CISSP is something that I can recommend, and will recommend, to those in the industry.

Glad to hear you had a better experience with your in-person exam, and very glad to hear you passed. Congrats!

You bring up one of the problems of the exam structure that I have always had an issue with and actually caused a friend of mine to fail the exam more than a dozen times before passing. That is the theory some test preparers have that the best way to test a person's knowledge of a subject is to ask tricky, "gotcha" questions. Done appropriately, this can result in new and interesting scenarios to apply your existing knowledge in novel ways. The most common application, however, is the use of linguistic "tricks" to make the tester give an incorrect answer because the sentence structure is not what the reader expects. These kinds of questions unfairly disadvantage those who do not speak the test's primary language as their primary language, in our case English, and those who did not receive proper instruction on the application of English language rules in school. To combat this, (ISC)² offers test takers the ability to register a different primary language and receive bonus points on the exam to somewhat make up for the disadvantage they face. However, this fails to address those who simply never learned to properly interpret incorrect grammar structures such as the double negative you give as an example. The result then is a test of your ability to interpret English "correctly" rather than a test of your knowledge of the domains. I say "correctly" because we would not be using grammatically-incorrect structures to properly test English interpretation skills.

To be fair, much of our industry revolves around the proper interpretation of rules, laws, and regulations, and this is a skill that should be tested. However, in my opinion, this should be directly tested in essay form and indirectly hinted at through English "trick".

My best advise to you? Use that frustration and volunteer to help make test questions. If all of us who are frustrated by these aspects of the test come together and volunteer our time, we can change the test for the better and make an exam that can improve the profession.

I feel your pain. I also provisional passed in Feb of 21. Was told I should hear something back in 5 days.....Didn't hear anything back until May. was told I had until July to retake and PASS. I literally had no time. I started a new job June 1. Took the retest and Failed. Now I am barred for 5 years. There offer no grievance or appeal process which is disheartening. But its not my organization. So
