I very sincerely hope NONE. If you take a board or officer position as the chapter is set up, then you should get the same service-based credit as for any other chapter service position. However, simply signing up on the initial membership roster of a new chapter is neither service to the profession nor continuing education.

CPE credit is for doing, not being.

There is difference between just a membership roster and a charter member. Unless you have been through the process o f getting up and running a local chapter.

Thank you for reaching out! My name is Paula, and I am a chapter relations specialist with (ISC)2.

To clarify, CPEs earned during the formation of a new chapter are provided to members who play a critical role in forming a chapter (i.e. being a chapter officer, planning meetings, researching presentations, assisting with communications, etc) - and are not provided to members during the chartering chapter process who attend meetings alone or who only provide general support.

It is important to remember the ethics clause that you signed as an (ISC)2 member, and to fully self-analyze you contribution in regards to the critical support you provided (either as a chapter officer or in support of the chapter officers) to the formation of the chapter. As such, one CPE credit can be earned per hour of work performed by members actively involved in forming and managing the chapter.

As a reminder, please note that these self-submitted CPEs (as well as all CPEs) are subject to random verification through a CPE audit.

Formally, and as stated in the chapter handbook:

Members who take a leadership role in forming or managing an (ISC)2 chapter are eligible to earn Group B CPE credits. This applies during the period of forming the chapter, as well as for the administrative services rendered for arranging and managing chapter meetings after receiving its charter. Only members who actively serve in forming/managing the chapter are eligible for credits.

One CPE credit is earned per hour of work performed under the category Chapter Formation/Management (Group B) - Information Systems Security Professional Association.

NOTE: Chapter members (non-officers) who dedicate their time to plan and organize meetings and activities for an official or chartering chapter are eligible to earn CPEs under these categories.

@paulablalock Paula, thank you for clarifying in more detail and with authority the point I was making.

@Tamang Chatur, Paula's explanation is exactly what I was referring to, You originally asked about credit for "being a charter member." Had you asked about, 'helping start a new chapter' my answer would have been differently stated, but in the same vein. Traditionally, every chapter member who attends the pre-charter meetings and signs up before the charter is issued is listed as a charter member of the chapter. Clearly, not all of them put in the work Paula described to get the chapter up and running and achieve the charter conditions.
