Can CPEs from GIAC courses be used for ISC2?

Hi guys, just would like to enquire if i take a SANS course (e.g. GCIH), will the CPE credits earned for the course be able to be used for our CPEs in ISC2 certification? (e.g. SSCP)

I would class this as "Attending a conference, educational course, seminar or presentation" and therefore a valid Group A CPE activity:

thanks for your info. just to confirm that it is not necessary to pass the GIAC certification in order to claim the CPE credits right? just participating in the GIAC course will do in order to get the CPE credits?

@wchen035 Thank you for reaching out. To confirm, as long as the activity is related to the domains of your certification, you may submit the CPEs. For training, you would receive 1 CPE per hour of attendance, up to 40 hours.

Yes.

Once you complete the course, in your SANS Membership Portal you can access all your "Orders" which will list the courses you've signed up for and paid. From there you can access the CPE certificate for the course, which you can then upload to ISC2 or any other certifying body.

I didn't take GIAC course, but gave GPEN exam. Can i get any CPE points from just giving 4 hours exam?

and if I can use it for ISC2 CPEs ?

I believe that if you take and pass another certification exam, you can use those for CPEs. Hours are based on the length of the exam. Should be covered in the CPE handbook. I think I claimed CPEs for my SANS courses and again when I took and passed the exams.

Please find and quote/cite the relevant section of the CPE handbook. I ask this because your interpretation differs from mine.

I think it has been pretty well established that earning a cert or taking a cert exam is not an educational activity, per se, so I agree with William @denbesten and also disagree with your interpretation. However, active study for the cert exam, especially in formal class or with published material, can certainly be documented as CPE.

Q:If I earn another certification, can I get credit for passing the examination?

A:For obtaining a new credential, you may submit up to 30 CPEs under the self-study category for the time you spent preparing to obtain the new certification.

@utkarshsawant If by "gave [the] GPEN exam" you mean you administered or facilitated the exam, then you cannot claim CPE credits. You could claim CPE credit for studying for an exam, however.

Hi, I'm curious how to submit this properly. I assume it's under "Education" category but I don't see specific "self-study" subcategory from the choices. I assume I need to upload my GIAC certification as proof/supporting document.

From the CPE handbook, "Self-study related to research for a project or preparing for a certification examination" is under Group A so I know it has to be certification related to domain. However, is there limitation to the certification such as ISC2 certification only, ISC2 approved list such as outline here (https://www.isc2.org/Certifications/CISSP/Prerequisite-Pathway), or DoD8570 approved list? Because I have GIAC Continuous Monitoring (GMON) and it's not on both list.

@sergeling Members can submit study for any other certification as long as cyber security related. Up to 40 hours for the study but not for the exam itself.

@CraginSI fully agree with you. Additionally, the current ISC2 CPE manual does not have any section on awarding CPE's to the actual exam take. Thus, if it is not mentioned, it is not possible - simple as that.

However, it is noteworthy that some governing organizations in fact do award CPE even for the actual exam hours. For instance with ISACA any successful exam attempt of a security certification is rewarded with 2 CPE per exam hour (e.g. 3h exam = 6 CPE) -> https://www.isaca.org/credentialing/how-to-earn-cpe
