Your article hit a nerve right off before even starting to read it. I guess I can't fully blame you because you just know the media BS and the lies told to Senate by Mudge of L0pht Heavy Industries to validate their hacking group and make money from it! They claimed that hacker were good guys and crackers were bad guys, when in fact they are 2 totally different unrelated things! A hacker is a person who accesses a computer system without authorization. If you have authorization what would you be? How about a security professional?!? But then what is a cracker you say? A cracker is a person who removes copy protection from commercial software. A person who makes a patch so a serial number is not needed, or writes a key generator for a program is a cracker. This one lie to the Senate enabled Lopht to legitimize their illegal activities making the very rich and warping the terms for ever it seems. Those of us who have been doing this stuff forever probably remember this stuff as well.

Sorry for the rant, it's just something I have never liked...

John, your response was excellent, and I appreciate your enthusiasm for cybersecurity. I agree that intent is key, but the real challenge lies in understanding people's true intentions, especially when they have access to sensitive data. It's incredibly difficult to determine what someone is really thinking.

I agree 100%, it was not long ago where some people from Booz Allen with TS clearances leaked data. Even with all the screening that is done to get a TS clearance they had no idea the people would turn around and leak data! I guess it comes back to trust no one!

Agreed, there are so many variables when it comes to dealing with people and sensitive information. Zero trust does not always equal 100% security.
