Personally, I don't use FB. However I do feel that it is unavoidable for some kind of social media to be a part of modern connected world. If not facebook, then some faceless-book will surely take its place.

We are in the infant stage of social media, and technologies are being used prematurely. Sometimes I feel like that the society uses FB etc without knowing the full adverse side-effects, just like we had used DDT, asbestos, etc., without knowing the long-lasting environmental damages.

Should we demand a central register for all Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), along with their stated purpose, security controls, development code and affirmation they have been independently reviewed before release?

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/11/26/facebook_twitter_data_loss/

Or should we just delete Facebook and let others get on with it?

Regards

Caute-cautim

Central register run by whom ?

It would be impossible to follow every API, every App Interface.

and it's not only Facebook. We may be angry at them, rightfully, and demand they be shut down, but what about everyone else ?

I use fb, as securely as I can. I don't use it on my phone or any similar media.

"The ramifications and persistence of our actions, are no longer in our control" -- yes and no, as a 'grown-up', if you post online always with respect, as if you were talking to someone face-to-face without the 'protection' of anonymity, your record should be just fine.

Of course, if you are young and reckless, whatever you posted will follow you forever. Unfortunately, most younger generations have no clue, until it is too late.

The best option is, try exposing your personal life online as little possible ...

JMHO

> Chuxing (Community Champion) posted a new reply in GDPR on 11-27-2019 10:21 AM

> Personally, I don't use FB.

I have a Facebook account, although I don't use it. Partly because, almost as soon
as I started using it, I realized that Facebook would create a huge chasm on the
Internet, between the Facebooked and the not-Facebooked ...

> However I do feel that it is unavoidable for some
> kind of social media to be a part of modern connected world.

I wish they'd settle on one, but then, if they were going to do that, they would
have stuck with email. The girls promised us faithfully that, if we got text-enabled
cell phones they'd stick with text. Then one of them moved to a location with
spotty cell service, and now we have to use Whatsapp. And, in our local security
group, we have to keep cross-posting stuff between email and Twitter and Slack
(and I *really* hate Slack) ...

> Sometimes I feel
> like that the society uses FB etc without knowing the full adverse side-effects,
> just like we had used DDT, asbestos, etc., without knowing the long-lasting
> environmental damages.

That is a really intriguing thought ...

====================== (quote inserted randomly by Pegasus Mailer)
rslade@vcn.bc.ca slade@victoria.tc.ca rslade@computercrime.org
If the law is against you, argue the facts.
