The different approaches to government and the economy between the EU and US with regard to socialism versus capitalism and also between big central government versus limited government are the basis for my observation. For a more complete discussion on this topic, see my blog post, Will the U.S. Adopt the EU GDPR for Privacy Protection?

> Brendan (Newcomer I) posted a new topic in GDPR on 11-20-2018 07:26 PM in the

> Subject: Privacy law in US?

Syntax error: you used "privacy" and "US" in the same subject line ...

> Based on the US Congress hosting hearings with social media companies this past
> summer, when will a US law similar to Europe's GDPR be implemented?

I assume that we all know that "US Congress hosting hearings with social media
companies" comes under the heading of security theatre. Since GDPR is primarily
based on the old EU privacy principles, it is unlikely that any similar laws will be
passed in the US. (The extra "accountability" part is similar to a lot of materials
that can be found in NIST ...)

> Would it
> be a similar model?

No. The US has spent 20 years attempting (and failing) to demonstrate that "Safe
Harbor" is the same, rather than passing any actual privacy legislation.

> Or are there any lessons learned from the GDPR, yet?

Syntax error: you used "Congress" and "learned" in the same posting ...

====================== (quote inserted randomly by Pegasus Mailer)
rslade@vcn.bc.ca slade@victoria.tc.ca rslade@computercrime.org
[I]t is the future that interests us.
