Privacy law in US?

Based on the US Congress hosting hearings with social media companies this past summer, when will a US law similar to Europe's GDPR be implemented? Would it be a similar model? Or are there any lessons learned from the GDPR, yet?

Brendan,

While we may see more legislation explicitly protecting privacy in the USA, I do not believe we will see anything close to the GDPR model in the US any time in the foreseeable future. The different approaches to government and the economy between the EU and US with regard to socialism versus capitalism and also between big central government versus limited government are the basis for my observation. I assume that we all know that "US Congress hosting hearings with social media
companies" comes under the heading of security theatre. Since GDPR is primarily
based on the old EU privacy principles, it is unlikely that any similar laws will be
passed in the US. (The extra "accountability" part is similar to a lot of materials
that can be found in NIST ...)

No. The US has spent 20 years attempting (and failing) to demonstrate that "Safe
Harbor" is the same, rather than passing any actual privacy legislation.
