Exactly what is your car telling your insurer?

Carmakers including Kia, Subaru, Mitsubishi and General Motors are providing details of owners’ driving behaviour to insurance companies, leading many drivers to report surges in car insurance premiums despite industry claims that the transmitted data (‘telematics’) helps good drivers pay less.

The revelations have stoked a PR firestorm after the New York Times related the experiences of Seattle software company owner Kenn Dahl, who was stunned when the cost of renewing the insurance on his electric Chevrolet Bolt jumped by 21 per cent for no obvious reason.

There are moves in the UK to introduce road pricing based on demand/congestion, one solution for which is for the state to be able to track drivers using telematics, so that they can supposedly abolish VED (car tax). So the state wants to track our every move, great, no intrusion into your private life there then. I wonder just how long it will be before the state decides it would be nice to switch citizens cars off remotely and restrict their freedom of movement.

@denbesten You may have to remove all glass and roof, as many times the actual aerial is built in as a low profile one, into the existing infrastructure without having a foot print. Tinfoil and Faraday cages around vital components may also assist too. But many times the manufacturers are being very clever at hiding antennae these days.

Yep, antennas can be all over the place, but I do suspect that Tinfoil over the windows may introduce a whole new risk. </s>

@denbesten Driverless cars will be safe at some point, but yes, windows are necessary for safe driving. Unless wants to be on social media or take risks.
