ISC(2) CC Practice Exam - Different Material Than What was Covered In ISC(2) CC Modules

Hello everyone,

I just finished my ISC(2) CC training class today, took and passed the post class assessment; I made a low A grade on the assessment. I am registered to take the exam on Saturday. I decided to do some research and found some ISC(2) CC practice tests on Udemy. Well, when taking the practice test there was a lot of questions about material I did not recall reading anything about. Not just a few, a lot. at least 30% of the questions. I have done some searching in the take-a-away PDFs I download after finished each module, and cannot find this content in the material. I am wondering if any of you have experience a similar thing? I am worried now about how much knowledge I truly have before taking this exam on Saturday, or is this just not a good practice test and covering more advance material? Does ISC(2) have their own practice test for the CC exam?

Udemy and ISC2 are obs not the same entities. I think if you learn all of the info in the ISC2 training plus follow the exam outline you should be knowledgable enough to pass the test. I’ve not sat it but from what I’m seeing it’s pretty basic.

There unfortunately isn’t a published CBK or self paced guide for the CC - however you might pick up SSCP or CISSP books or even Security+ for additional coverage and ISC2 also sell two other packages beyond the exam Anf 50 bucks AMF thereafter.

So as you don’t have much time why not make a list of all the Udemy points you didn’t have knowledge on and learn those - can’t promise they really map well to the ISC2 domains however doing this will set you mind at ease with regards to your main concern.

I wonder how did you ultimately do, did you pass on your first attempt? I have read and heard that the modules do not properly prepare for the exam.

I've also used the courses in Udemy, as well as a course from Mike Chapple in LinkedIn Learning (https://www.linkedin.com/learning/cert-prep-isc2-certified-in-cybersecurity-cc) and the "CC Certified in Cybersecurity All-in-One Exam Guide" book (https://www.amazon.com/Certified-Cybersecurity-All-One-Guide/dp/1265203814/) and its related online test bank.
I've already passed the CompTIA Security+ exam, therefore many topics and concepts were not new to me when I've taken and passed the CC exam at the end of November.

i just took mine i studied like crazy went and redid the modules again i did the practice exams multiple times scoring around 80-90%. i Felt i was ready i knew i was ready for the cybersecurity certificate Exam. Well today i went to take the test and maybe around 10-15 questions out of 100 were actually about the modules and the Terminology i studied so hard for, i completely failed the test. it was baffling and i was mind blown how different and how all the practice exams and all the key words, the terminology had almost nothing to do with the test.

Took mine yesterday. Quite surprised that there were some questions that were not covered in the online course materials as well as the LinkedIn Learning by Mike Chapple. Went by gut feel and applied based on business knowledge after working in IT for so long.

Several questions had 2 very close answers after elimination and really needed to think carefully. If you put yourself in the shoes of the hacker, most answers were rather obvious.

Some questions were giveaway, the answer was already in the question, keywords used were a dead giveaway. The online course materials and assessment is nowhere near the exam questions. Alot of it required derivative thinking.

Like instead of asking you what port DNS server uses, it actually asked you why the entire network was not working after installing a new firewall, which port needs to be opened to fix it. CC is an entry certification but some of it requires work experience and/or technical knowledge.

Some requires logical thinking and deduction, some requires putting yourself in the shoes of the hacker.

Conclusion? I passed - provisionally, awaiting transmission of results from test centre to ISC2. Not sure if moving on to CISSP is a good move next.

The material in the test is different from the training modules. I just took it and failed it. I would say the training modules are not represented on the test. Maybe I got ten out of the 100 questions from the ISC2 CC training module, and I do not know where the rest came from. If anyone has leads on where to get this material to study and share, that would be great.

Here's an observation from when my youngest took Driver's Ed., and the "instructor" told her to download an app that poses questions about rules of the road; she could just learn the rules based on the feedback. I think that approach has become pretty common today (arguably it's a fair analog to machine learning, even).

While that may work for some subject matter, there are two problems you will run into with security:

Foremost, things appear to change quickly in this industry. Major changes occur almost by accident, without much accurate prediction or any framework to understand their risks. They web blew up the client-server model, the cloud blew up on premise, and AI may burn it all down and start anew. You have to rely on foundational knowledge to be able to shift with it. Security is like developing an economic theory. You need to understand both micro and macro and have them work consistently in the face of outside factors.
Most of those apps are written by people trying to make a quick name or buck. Often the question writers don't have subject matter expertise. They'fe just someone making $15 an hour (or an AI) looking at text and turning it around into a question.

In this industry, we face a lot of burnout that goes hand in hand with what is often called "imposter syndrome." This job can be tough, but it becomes a lot more stressful if you feel like you are always swimming over your head. A lot of us who survived in this industry began at a time when there really wasn't much formal security. It was something we did as part of system administration, running the network, etc. It gave the opportunity to amass a lot of well-rounded experience. That's valuable not just from an ability to "know out" a problem or new technology, but also the ability to communicate and manage. It's harder to do that today with all the pigeon-holing of duties, but what I have seen too is that people are in such a rush to get certs and climb the pay scale, they leap over a lot of that opportunity to move laterally, gain experience, and maybe find something that they really like.

So yes, test prep may be part of the recipe, but don't rely on it as a way to gain knowledge or confidence. Get hands-on as much as you can. Take a look at the ISC2 suggested references and read these:

I'd also add to that list Ross Anderson's Security Engineering (which I am shocked is not on that list).
