I just recently registered for the Self Paced Training. I'm interested in a type of group study or just an informal way of checking with each on progress and swapping tips in preparing for the exam. A little more motivation than just self pacing it solo.

Not everything that is covered in the instructor led session will be on the test, it just gives you a general idea of what topics can be seen. Even if you take the instructor led sessions I would recommend studying the broader topics. i.e. the instructor can cover and talk about XYZ with a focus on protocol B but on the exam it may be protocol A and protocol C which the instructor never explicitly mentions.

Can you explain what you mean by protocol B but on the exam it may be protocol A and protocol C which the instructor never explicitly mentions?

How long is the pilot exam?

The pilot exam contains 100 test items in a standard, linear exam format. There is a two (2) hour maximum administration time that is inclusive of all optional breaks and information screens.

All standard (ISC)² exam policies and practices, including rescheduling and special accommodations, also apply to the pilot exam program. Learn more here. It is recommended that all candidates review these policies and procedures prior to sitting for the pilot exam.

If you're in the UK I'd advise that if you haven't bought this exam yet, try to sign up for a free voucher. Apparently they are giving away 100k free exams
In this case, for me, seems the early bird caught ... paying for something they give away for free
